The Plate desert is a ntural geological site in Haute savoie near Chamonix. It is the biggest limestone pavement of europe. Limestone pavementsa lift from flaine to arrive at 2480m high on the top of this desert. The holes found on the Limestones are created by two different process. Firstly by a mechanic process due to the friction of the water and secondly by chemical process where the carbonic acid dissolve the Limestones.
This exceptional rocky formation is the home of numerous species. I have met two of them. Firstly it is very easy to observe a colony of male ibex living on the desert during summer months. I have been able to observe 10 members of this colony for few hours. Suspicious at first, when they see that you are not a threat, it is possible to observe them from few meters away without disturbing them. I was lucky a lot of little wild flowers sublimes the pictures.
Secondly I have been able to see the Rock ptarmigan, in a foggy evening I disturbed a male (black) and female (beige). After that I played hide and seek with them for half an hour !
To finish with this post, this is the vue i had after my bivouac there facing the mont Blanc !
